Is God Loving? Understanding Divine Love Through the Cross

The question of God's love has echoed throughout the ages and has stirred the hearts and minds of countless individuals. From the inner courts of the heavenly realms to our tiny planet, this question delves deep into the very heart of God. The crucifixion of Jesus Christ, stands at the epicentre of this query, and offers profound answers to this question that has been contemplated since the war between good and evil in heaven when Lucifer—challenged God's righteousness and Love.

The origins of doubt about God's love began with Lucifer, this once-prominent angel who rebelled against God. In his rebellion, Lucifer—later known as Satan, a very real being—called into question God's righteousness and benevolence. He insinuated that God's laws were arbitrary and that His governance was self-serving, rather than rooted in love—the ultimate expression of other-centredness. And he continues to accuse God of the suffering and pain throughout the earth, that has come as a result of his rebellion. This cosmic conflict demanded a response regarding God's true character. The cross of Christ, planned before the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8) becomes the pivotal event that addresses these accusations head-on, and settles the question, "Is God loving?".

The Scriptures affirm explicitly that "God is love" (1 John 4:8). This declaration is not merely a statement about what God does but about who He is at His core. Love is the fundamental attribute of His character, from where all of His actions and intentions flow. The cross of Christ is not just a historical event but the definitive answer to the question of God's love.

The Ultimate Expression of Love: The Cross

God's sacrificial gift is encapsulated in John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." This verse highlights the magnitude of God's love for humanity, demonstrating His willingness to give His Son for our salvation. It's a selfless love that seeks the well-being of others above Himself.

Moreover, Romans 5:8 states, "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." God's love is proactive, reaching out to us even when we are distant from Him. It's an unconditional love that doesn't wait for us to become worthy.

Jesus Himself said in John 15:13, "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends." Here, Jesus identifies self-sacrifice as the highest form of love, which He exemplified through His death on the cross. Yet, His love extends even further. Romans 5:10 expands on this by saying, "For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son..." Christ's sacrifice wasn't limited to His friends or followers but extended to those who opposed Him. This radical love challenges our understanding, showcasing a love that embraces even those who reject it.

In a world filled with uncertainty, suffering and, constant change, God's steadfast love offers a sure foundation of hope. Isaiah 54:10 provides reassurance: "For the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but My kindness shall not depart from you, nor shall My covenant of peace be removed." Even when everything else falters God's love remains constant. His covenant of peace is an unbreakable promise to those who seek Him.

Creation's Testimony to God's Love

Beyond the cross, the natural world reflects God's loving nature. The intricate designs of a blooming flower, the soothing touch of a gentle breeze, and the life-giving warmth of the sun all speak to a Creator who cares deeply for His creation. As Psalm 19:1 echoes, "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork." Nature itself proclaims His love and glory.

Proverbs 19:23 observes, "The fear of the Lord leads to life, and he who has it will abide in satisfaction." Reverence and respect for God and all He has done for us bring about a fulfilling life. Trusting in His love results in inner peace and contentment.

The Ever-Present Answer

The question "Is God loving?" finds its most profound answer in the cross of Christ. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus provides an irrefutable demonstration of selfless love, addressing the doubts since the war in heaven. The cross exposes the false claims of Lucifer, showcasing a God who gives everything for the redemption of His creation. It invites all—friends and enemies alike—into a restored relationship with God, offering a powerful testament that God's love overcomes rebellion and extends grace to all who accept it.

The revelation of God's love through the cross calls for a response from each of us. We are invited to embrace the truth that we are deeply loved by God, allowing this love to transform our hearts, heal our wounds, and dispel our doubts and fears. By trusting in God's unfailing and eternal selfless love, we gain hope and strength to face life's challenges with confidence and peace. The love of God is not just a concept to be pondered but a reality to be experienced and shared.
