Was the devil an angel?

In the hearts and minds of many Bible believing Christians, the question of the devil's origins remains a mystery. Yet the Bible provides explicit detail, revealing the truth behind of the origins of the devil and answering the often asked question, 'Was the devil an angel?' Unraveling this mystery helps us understand the ongoing spiritual warfare that Christians faces in their daily lives.

The Origin of the Devil: A Glorious Beginning

Lucifer, "son of the morning," originated in the heavenly realms as one of God's most esteemed creations according to Isaiah 14:12. This title indicates a high-ranking angelic status prior to his rebellion. According to the Scriptures, Lucifer was not just any angel; he was depicted as the “anointed cherub who covers” (Ezekiel 28:14, NKJV), possessing unfathomable beauty and wisdom. However, with such glory came the danger of pride. "Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor" (Ezekiel 28:17, NKJV).

Lucifer's downfall from his former angelic state is a vivid portrayal and warning of how pride can tarnish even the most glorious of beings. Rebelling against God, Lucifer experienced severe consequences: he was "cut down to the ground" (Isaiah 14:12, NKJV). This dramatic fall reveals the shift from a being who was once admired, to one that became the adversary of both God and man kind.

The War in Heaven

Lucifer’s rebellion in heaven was not isolated to his individual fall. It came to a climactic head in a heavenly conflict that echoed throughout the cosmos. Revelation 12:7-8 (NKJV) reads, "And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail." This pivotal battle marked the moment when Lucifer, here identified as the dragon or satan, lost his place amidst the heavenly beings. Both Lucifer and his followers, were cast out of heaven. No longer the anointed cherub that covers, Lucifer became the great adversary called the devil and satan. The word satan, can literally be translated to adversary.

The Devil's Current Role

Revelation 12, when describing satan's fall from the heavenly courts comes with a warning to the inhabitants of the earth, "Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time". Fast forward to our present day; where satan is described as a cunning enemy in 1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV) "a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." These Scriptures remind Christians that vigilance is necessary when confronted with the temptations and schemes of the devil. His deceptive strategies are all around us, designed to weaken faith and obstruct our relationship with God.

Yet, there’s hope! 1 John 5:18 (NKJV) reassures believers of a victorious life that is theirs in Christ, and that "the wicked one does not touch him" who is born of God. This promise of protection reminds us of God's sovereignty over all of creation, and emphasises the reality, that while Satan's influence is significant, his power is fundamentally limited and subordinate to God's divine authority.

Understanding the Great Controversy

At play here is the theme of the Great Controversy. This ideological and spiritual conflict began in heaven when a created being, endowed with free will chose to rebel against God, the Creator of heaven and earth and all that is within them. The ramifications of his actions have been experienced throughout the universe from that day until this causing many to ask the question, "Why does God allow suffering?"

Lucifer’s transformation into satan, was not just an internal conflict but was the beginning of a profound spiritual war that continues to impact humanity. And satan continues to lay charge against God for the suffering and death caused by his own rebellion. He continues in his work of deception to distort the truth about God and makes every effort to confound humanities quest for faith and truth. The struggles that believers face today is an echo this cosmic battle, that requires constant reliance on God’s Word and the Holy Spirit for strength, guidance and peace.

The Battle for Humanity’s Heart

The devil's influence can be seen in the many of the trials and tribulations faced by believers as they strive to lead lives of faithfulness and obedience to God amidst a fallen world. Yet, the narrative does not end in despair. God, who is abundant in mercy, provides tools for victory. Through Christ’s redemptive work, believers can experience both forgiveness and power over sin, making them victorious over the very schemes designed to destroy them.

Satan's presence reminds us of the need to be spiritually vigilant. His ongoing efforts to deceive and destroy, should invoke in the followers of Christ a spirit of alertness and reliance on the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Christians are called to "put on the whole armor of God" as stated in Ephesians 6:11, a safeguard against the fiery darts of the adversary.

So, Was the devil an angel?

It is explicitly clear from scripture that the devil was an angel. But it is also explicitly clear, that in the bible we find promises of deviance from the devil. We are provided a sobering illustration of the consequences of pride and rebellion against God. From being a glorious angel to becoming the adversary of the souls of humanity, the story of Lucifer underscores the importance of humility and dedication to God’s will.

We are reminded that in the midst of this cosmic battle, we are not without hope or the tools needed for victory. Through Christ, we can stand firm against the devil's schemes, knowing that he has already been defeated at the cross! Hallelujah!
